Couples Psychological Therapy
Understanding relationship patterns and creating more meaningful ways of relating.
Relationships can become difficult when familiar patterns of interaction begin to repeat, particularly during periods of stress, transition or significant change.
Couples therapy provides a space to slow these patterns down and understand what is happening in the relationship.
The work is collaborative and relational, with attention to the emotional experiences, underlying needs and patterns that shape the relationship.
WHEN COUPLES SEEK THERAPY
Couples may seek therapy when they are experiencing:
Repeated conflict or difficulty resolving disagreements
Emotional distance or loss of connection
Difficulties with communication, intimacy or trust
Recurring patterns of criticism, withdrawal or misunderstanding
The impact of stress, work, illness or other pressures on the relationship
Difficulties adjusting to parenthood or other significant life transitions
Sometimes couples know exactly what they want to address. At other times, they simply know that the relationship no longer feels as it once did.
MY APPROACH
My approach is depth-oriented and relational, informed by emotion-focused, attachment and schema perspectives.
I am interested not only in the difficulties couples experience, but in the emotional and relational patterns that shape their interactions.
Therapy may explore the needs and vulnerabilities beneath recurring conflict, the ways each partner responds when feeling hurt, disconnected or under pressure, and how established patterns can unintentionally reinforce one another.
The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship and support greater flexibility in how partners respond to one another.
I have a particular interest in working with couples navigating demanding professional lives, significant life transitions, and the transition to parenthood.
THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS
Couples sessions are 90 minutes, allowing sufficient time for both partners to be heard and for the work to move beyond the immediate presenting issue.
You are welcome to begin with an initial consultation and consider the next step from there.
For couples who would like greater continuity, an initial six-session program is also available, with sessions scheduled in advance to allow the therapeutic work to develop before reviewing progress and considering whether further therapy would be helpful.
